Free Meridian Therapy charts and tips for clients

Even if you have no knowledge of EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and the other energy techniques I use, it is easy to start working by phone.  I can email or post you free charts, a free mini-workbook and client worksheets to guide you through the process.  You will have the charts in front of you when we start working, and you can use them between coaching sessions when working on your own. You will need to pay for a session before receiving the free charts - in the meantime there is lots of free material available on www.emofree.com if you want to learn about EFT .

What is Energy Coaching?

Energy Coaching is the application of energy therapy (also known as meridian therapy, emotional freedom techniques or energy psychology) techniques to life and personal coaching.

This group of techniques is used to rapidly defuse negative thought and feeling patterns using acupressure (gentle tapping on meridian points using the fingers) while at the same time making relevant positive statements.  The basic procedure is simple and can be learned in a few minutes (charts to help you will be provided by email or as downloads). As well as working through issues with your coach/ energy therapy practitioner, you will learn to use the routines for simple self-therapy, stress management and confidence building anywhere you are - versions of the techniques can be used unobtrusively in social situations when you need them. A wide range of issues can be helped by these techniques.

How Energy Coaching techniques developed

Energy psychology techniques began with a discovery by Roger Callahan, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist, that a phobia could be cured by tapping on a spot under the eye that relates to the stomach meridian in Chinese medicine theory. The meridians are pathways for the body's subtle energy flow (called chi in Chinese medicine). Instead of the prevalent supposition that lasting emotional disturbances are "hard-wired" in the brain, energy psychology views the disturbance as a "thought field" that is disrupting the body's energy system. When accupressure (finger tapping techniques) are performed, the negative emotions can reduce greatly in intensity and disappear. This process can be accomplished in much less time than conventional counselling or psychotherapy.

Further refinements of energy psychology were made by Gary Craig, a student of Dr Callahan, who developed Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT (see www.emofree.com)  EFT is simpler to use as it uses more standardised procedures than can be remembered easily, and the basic method is very easy to learn. Various other practitioners developed their own additions to the method to make EFT an extremely versatile therapy. Elements of NLP, reframing and affirmation work have been added and the field is constantly growing.

EFT is extremely suitable for integration with life coaching because it shares a similar philosophy based upon the independence and self-responsibility of the client and giving the client choice about what issues to work on. Most coaching issues can be helped using EFT to work on the underlying beliefs, attitudes and emotions that are holding you back from making positive changes.  EFT can also be used to help access positive inner resources and to develop positive attitudes towards change and abundance, thereby increasing the likelihood of success. EFT can also be used to maintain equilibrium in times of crisis when we need to reconsider the options available in order to move forward. EFT can also be used as a general de-stressing technique: ask your coach for tips for times you regularly need help with stress, for example commuting.

EFT by phone

EFT is ideally suited to work by phone. The client is taught with the aid of diagrams to tap on specific points while concentrating on certain thoughts and repeating certain statements. The EFT coach or therapist guides the client to uncover different facets or "aspects" of the problem, and that is an essential task for major issues as each part of the problem creates its own "thought field" or energy blockage that is given its own tapping routine. Without uncovering the crucial pieces of the emotional jigsaw puzzle, the presenting issue might persist.  Another key role of the practitioner is to help the client formulate the statements said while performing the tapping routines. Clients often have inhibitions against saying the positive statements and need encouragement or help rewording the statements so they are acceptable to the client. Sometimes there are other signs of deep self-sabotage that the practitioner shows the client how to tackle.

Applications of Energy Psychology/ Energy Coaching techniques

EFT can help with many issues including confidence, assertiveness, fears, procrastination, stress, anger, tension, anxiety, unwanted habits, loss, inner child issues, forgiveness issues, weight reduction, and most issues that could also be treated by counselling or hypnotherapy. People who are progressing well with other therapies and become "stuck" may benefit from some EFT in order to move forward.

EFT can help in managing pain especially pain related to tension. If a client has a physical illness, his/her doctor's involvement is essential though EFT can be taught as a complementary self-help technique.  EFT can be used as a tool to help uncover the emotional factors that may relate to an illness, and clearing emotional and energy blocks can theoretically aid recovery.  An EFT coach can help a person to manage illness by through emotional self-help and energetic balancing. (Remember that EFT is a complementary from of help - it does not replace medical treatment).

Coaching issues that can be addressed with EFT can include any issue where there is an internal conflict, self-sabotage, negative thinking or negative feelings that get in the way of achieving the client's particular aim. EFT can also be used to build up positive feelings and resources so as to be stronger, more confident and more focused. A positive sense of the future can be "built in" to replace negative imaginings. EFT can be used for attracting abundance by replacing negative beliefs about having enough with positive ones.

The applications of EFT are limitless, and new applications are constantly appearing on the www.emofree.com site which is the major resource for all those interested in EFT.  There is a saying in EFT - "use it on everything!"  or "try it on anything!"

Self-acceptance

A key part of EFT and similar techniques is self-acceptance. Change starts by accepting yourself as you are, no matter what faults you have or think you have. (That makes sense because most emotional issues stem from not being accepted, loved, recognised, respected or treated well by another, or being told that we are defective in some way.) For most people the self-acceptance part is easy but for people with stronger issues of guilt, conflict, etc., the EFT practitioner will help you to find a form of self-acceptance or self-recognition that will work.

Emotional Freedom Reiki  (EFR)

Emotional Freedom Reiki is variation of EFT developed by Reiki Master and Life Coach Stephanie Brail that combines EFT, Reiki and chakra healing.  Like EFT it is done using acupressure tapping and incorporates sending Reiki energy into the chakras to energise positive statements. Practitioners should be Reiki masters or have Reiki Second Degree. It is ideal for clients who have at least Second Degree Reiki, though if the client is not attuned to Reiki, the client performs a simple healing visualisation instead and the practitioner sends Reiki by distant healing. Any issue suitable for EFT can be adapted to EFR.  Like EFT, EFR is well suited to phone work and to life coaching.

Learning and Doing EFT by Yourself

EFT was specifically created as a method that is easy to learn and to do oneself, and it is even widely taught to children. Many books on Emotional Freedom Techniques are available, and a free introductory manual is downloadable from www.emofree.com   However, as with any other self-help method, the time can come when you are out of your depth, feel that you are resisting, need help and are not sure what to do next, or have an issue that is too emotive for you to proceed on your own. A professional EFT practitioner will listen to you, guide you gently through the maze and help you focus on the next steps. He or she might suggest doing your EFT differently or adding an extra technique. Practitioners will also look out for factors that might be interfering with the smooth working of EFT, and these can include food or environmental sensitivities that might affect your energy flow.

Notes for the skeptic

EFT at the moment is a complementary, experimental treatment that does not have widespread scientific acceptance. However, scientific studies on its precursor, Thought Field Therapy, have shown it to affect heart rate variability, which a placebo cannot do. Various research studies are in progress and if you go to www.emofree.com and type "research" into the search box you will find various articles and reports.

It is not necessary for the practitioner or the client to "believe" in the existence of meridians or subtle energy flows to benefit from EFT.  It is not faith healing. In some peoples' opinion, EFT is a specialised form of suggestion. Nevertheless, it can work!
